The Twins is an adult Marathi story of longing, a promised marriage, and a dread that gathers. Rahul, son of Bapu Nadkarni, and Rekha, the only daughter of Sardar Raote, have been in each other's sight since childhood. Their fathers, friends from boyhood, settle the match. Before the engagement Rahul is invited to stay eight days at the Raote wada, a curious mansion outside the village, neither a modern house nor an old fort, its doors open only to a chosen few. In a mirror-lined room, and on the path toward the river pool, he begins to meet a man who wears his own face. Rekha, too, sees him where he never stood. As the wedding nears, Rahul fears that something in the wada wants Rekha for itself. At stake is the life they have been promised, and whether he can tell himself from the other in time.
